Cambridge, Mass. -
A game-winning goal against New York State rival Binghamton on Saturday has earned freshman Leonardo Fernandes (North Babylon, N.Y.) America East Rookie of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. It is the first America East award for Fernandes, who leads the Seawolves with four goals and 10 points.
Fernandes scored the game-winner just three minutes into the second half as he took a pass from sophomore Wilber Bonilla (Brentwood, N.Y.), turned and faced Binghamton keeper Jason Stenta, and with one dribble to his left, shot it past Stenta's left for the score. It was just the second time in nine games Stony Brook beat its upstate rival.
The Seawolves face another in-state rival as they take on Albany on Saturday evening at 7 pm.
