Vestal, N.Y. -
Stony Brook University's volleyball team received nine kills and six digs from senior Harmonie Calinda (Huntington, N.Y.) but it wasn't enough as the Seawolves fell to Binghamton, 3-0 (25-12, 25-18, 25-22), on Sunday afternoon. The loss evens Stony Brook's record at 10-10 (2-2 America East) while Binghamton improves to 11-9 (3-1).
Binghamton's offense got off to a hot start in the opening set, recording kills on seven of its first eight points, as it opened up an early 10-6 advantage. A kill by Calinda pulled SBU within three at 11-8 before the Bearcats scored eight-straight points to break the set open. Binghamton hit .556 as a team, committing just two errors, as it held on for the 25-12 win.
Despite two early blocks by junior Ashley Headen (Alexandria, Va.), the Seawolves found themselves in an early hole in the second set. Binghamton's Anna Lejina recorded six of her set-high eight kills as the Bearcats opened a 14-7 lead. SBU struggled offensively, registering nine kills while committing seven errors.
Behind six kills from Calinda and four from Headen, SBU's offense rallied in the third set as the Seawolves took a two-point advantage at 8-6. Binghamton fought back to take a 13-12 advantage before SBU rallied off three straight points to move back in front, 15-13. The two teams then battled back-and-forth, with the Bearcats eventually knotting the score at 19-19. While Binghamton's offense would not record another kill, the Bearcats took advantage of five Stony Brook errors to pull away with the 25-22 win.
Stony Brook will wrap-up its three-game road streak on Friday when it travels to Baltimore, Maryland to take on UMBC.
