Men's Soccer Rallies To Tie New Hampshire, 1-1

Freshman Berian Gobeil's (Montreal, Quebec) fifth goal of the season knotted the game at one as the Stony Brook men's soccer team rallied to tie first-place New Hampshire, 1-1, on Saturday afternoon at Lewis Fields. Redshirt freshman Anthony Rogic (Boonton, N.J.) made six saves for Stony Brook, which pulled into a tie with Hartford for second place (10 points) in the America East standings. The Seawolves are 4-9-3, 3-2-1 with one conference game remaining in the 2009 regular season while the Wildcats are 8-5-2, 5-0-1.

Despite outshooting New Hampshire, 11-4, in the first half, the Wildcats' Joe Annese opened the scoring. A shot from the right flank into the left corner gave the home team a 1-0 advantage.

Stony Brook, which scored first in the last three games, came back to tie the game in the 60th minute. Freshman Antonio Crespi (North Babylon, N.Y.) beat two defenders down the right side and served the ball towards the goal mouth. New Hampshire keeper Colin O'Donnell came out to play the ball but his attempt was unsuccessful and Gobeil corralled the ball and tallied the equalizer. Gobeil is now tied with freshman Leonardo Fernandes (North Babylon, N.Y.) for the team lead in goals.

In the overtime periods, New Hampshire took six shots to Stony Brook's one but Rogic, who has been outstanding in the last four games, made two key saves on forward Chris Banks, who had a game-high nine shots. Gobeil and Crespi combined for nine of Stony Brook's 18 shots.

Rogic tied his career high with six saves on Saturday. O'Donnell and backup keeper Chris Devine combined to make nine saves.

The 2009 regular season finale is next Saturday against Hartford. Prior to the 7 pm start, seniors Oscar Leis (Ozone Park, N.Y.), James Palumbo (Carmel, N.Y.), Collin Geoghegan (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) and Damion Brown (Kingston, Jamaica) will be honored in pre-game ceremony.
