Jarrett Parker went 2-for-4 with four RBI to lead the No. 11 Virginia Cavaliers to an 8-0 victory over the Stony Brook University baseball team tonight at Davenport Field. Junior Michael Stephan (Patchogue, N.Y.) went 2-for-4, including a double, to lead the Seawolves. Stony Brook falls to 12-12 with the loss while the Cavaliers improve to 27-5.
The Seawolves nearly grabbed an early lead, loading the bases with two outs in the first. But UVA starter Robert Poutier then struck out senior Michael Tansey (Valley Stream, N.Y.) to end the threat.
Virginia jumped on top with a run in its half of the first as Parker walked to lead off, stole second and then came around to score on am RBI double from Phil Gosselin. The Cavaliers added two more runs in the second on a two-run double from Parker.
The Cavaliers pushed their lead to 6-0 in the fourth on run-scoring hits from John Barr, Gosselin and Steven Proscia. Stony Brook almost got on the board in the fifth as sophomore Nick Thode (Huntington Station, N.Y.) walked with one out and moved to second on a single from sophomore Chad Marshall (Paris, Ontario). But Poutier then retired Stephan and senior Steven Mazzurco (Selden, N.Y.) to get out of the jam.
UVA scored the final two runs of the game in the eighth on a two-run home run from Parker. Poutier picked up the victory for the Cavaliers, allowing no runs and five hits in his 5.0 innings of work.
Senior Jonathan Kalkau (Bellmore, N.Y.) took the loss for Stony Brook as he gave up three runs on four hits in 3.0 innings.
The teams will wrap up the two-game series on Wednesday at Davenport Field. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
