Stony Brook Volleyball Picked Fifth In America East Preseason Poll

Aug. 18, 2009

Full America East Release

Cambridge, Mass. - Stony Brook University's volleyball team has been picked to finish fifth in the America East preseason head coaches' poll. The Seawolves have four starters returning from last year's squad including junior Ashley Headen (Alexandria, Va.) who finished second in the conference last year with 1.04 blocks per set. SBU opens its season on August 28 against Maryland. Its first home match will be September 1 when the Seawolves host St. John's.

"Our goal is to play solid defense and have a consistent hitting attack," said head coach Deborah Matejka-DesLauriers. "We are very balanced both above and below the net this season and I think that will translate into us having a great year."

Along with the ten returning players, Stony Brook has five talented newcomers filling out the roster. Transfer senior Harmonie Calinda (Huntington, N.Y.) and sophomore Bianca Hernandez (East Moriches, N.Y.) deepen the Seawolves pool of experience while freshmen Corinne Perry (Northport, N.Y.), Sally Downs (Coppell, Texas) and Greta Strenger (Woodbury, Minn.) could all compete for a starting position.
