Men's Soccer Falls To Eastern Illinois, 2-0

Evansville, Ind. - The Stony Brook men's soccer team fell to Eastern Illinois, 2-0, in the first game of the 2009 Purple Aces ProRehab Classic hosted by the University of Evansville on Friday evening. Freshman Stefan Manz (Bronx, N.Y.) made three saves in goal for the Seawolves (1-5-1). Freshman Raphael Abreu (New York, N.Y.) added three shots coming off the bench.

Stony Brook got its first scoring attempt in the 23rd minute. Freshman Mehdi Belakehal's (St. Hubert, Quebec) corner kick eventually was played by freshman Leonardo Fernandes (North Babylon, N.Y.) but his attempt was saved.

Jonathan Hinds scored the first goal for Eastern Illinois (2-2-1), beating Manz from 12 yards out to the far post.

Freshman Berian Gobeil (Montreal Quebec), who scored on a penalty kick on Wednesday for his third goal of the season, had his shot attempt saved in 1:05 into the second half.

With Stony Brook adding numbers in the offensive end looking for the tie, the Panthers scored on a breakway in the 85th minute.

Stony Brook is back in action on Sunday, when it takes on Evansville on Sunday afternoon at 3:30 pm. The Seawolves defeated the Purple Aces, 1-0, in 2006 in the same tournament.
