Final Stats

Evansville, Ind. - Despite two second-half goals from freshman Leonardo Fernandes (North Babylon, N.Y.), the Stony Brook University men's soccer team could not overcome five first-half goals from Evansville as it fell, 5-3, to the host Purple Aces at the 2009 ProRehab Aces Soccer Classic on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Tom Butler (Birmingham, England) also scored for the Seawolves (1-6-1), who had Fernandes and freshman Berian Gobeil (Montreal, Quebec) named to the all-tournament team. Evansville, which won its own classic for the second straight year, is 5-2-0.

Evansville took a 3-0 lead after just 25 minutes of game action but Butler made it a 3-1 game three minutes later. Following a hand ball in the box, Butler scored the Seawolves' third penalty-kick goal of the season and his first goal of the year.

Blake Schneider set up the next two goals for the Purple Aces as they had a 5-1 halftime lead.

The Seawolves scored the only two goals of the second half, both coming from Fernandes. In the 62nd minute Fernandes blasted a 40-yard bomb past Evansville keeper Robert Randant to make it a 5-2 game. Gobeil, who is tied with Fernandes and sophomore Wilber Bonilla (Brentwood, N.Y.) for the team in goals with three, set up Fernandes' second tally of the game. After a touch from Gobeil, Fernandes made a tremendous individual play, dribbling and scoring from 12 yards out on the right side of the box, making it a two-goal game, 5-3. The three goals given up by Evansville were the most its allowed this season since losing to North Carolina, 4-0, in the opening weekend of 2009.

Stony Brook, which scored just 11 goals all of last year, now has the same total in eight games.

The Seawolves wrap up their 2009 non-conference schedule, beginning with a match at Quinnipiac on Wednesday at 4 pm.
