Final Stats

Durham, N.H. - Junior Alicia Nelson (Apple Valley, Minn.) recorded a career-high 21 kills and senior Jeanette Gibbs (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) had a game-high 18 digs but the New Hampshire Wildcats hit .308 on its way to a 3-1 (25-23, 25-17, 20-25, 25-19) victory over the Stony Brook University volleyball team on Sunday afternoon at Lundholm Gymnasium. Stony Brook falls to 6-12 overall and 1-1 in the America East with the loss.

Nelson hit .400 for the match and added 10 digs as she recorded her fifth double-double of the season. Senior Ashley Headen (Alexandria, Va.) tallied 13 kills for the Seawolves.

The first set was close early, with the Seawolves taking their largest lead, 18-14, on a block from freshman Evann Slaughter (Clinton, Md.). New Hampshire ran off five straight points to take a one-point lead before a kill from freshman Kaitlin Costello (Webster, N.Y.) tied it at 19.

New Hampshire eventually took a 24-22 lead but a block from Headen and junior Kelsey Sullivan (Hamilton, Va.) brought the Seawolves within one. The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead a point later though on a Stony Brook attack error.

The second set was close early as well, with the Seawolves trailing by just two, 15-13, following a service error by Taylor Dressing. But the Wildcats then scored seven of the next eight points to take a 22-14 lead and SBU got no closer than seven the rest of the way.

New Hampshire jumped to a 14-10 lead in set three but the Seawolves then went on a 9-3 run, with the help of three kills from Headen, to take a 19-17 advantage. UNH tied it at 19 but Stony Brook scored six of the next seven points to take the set and cut the New Hampshire lead to 2-1.

Set four was close most of the way as well, with neither team taking more than a three-point lead until New Hampshire took a 18-14 advantage on a Stony Brook attack error. The Seawolves had an answer though, scoring three straight points to close within one.

But New Hampshire had a response as an Amy Keding kill sparked a 6-1 run to bring UNH within a point of winning the match. A Nelson kill cut the UNH lead to 24-18 but the Wildcats closed out the set and the match a point later on a kill from Jessie Schnepp.

The Seawolves return to action on Friday, traveling to take on UMBC. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
