Junior Alicia Nelson (Apple Valley, Minn.) led the Seawolves with a match-best 14 kills to go along with nine digs. Senior Ashley Headen (Alexandria, Va.) tallied 12 kills on a .429 hitting percentage while sophomore Greta Strenger (Woodbury, Minn.) recorded a match-high 11 digs.
Stony Brook jumped on the Friars early, grabbing a 10-5 lead in set one. The Seawolves took their largest lead of the set, 17-8, on a service ace from freshman Hailee Herc (Eden, N.Y.) and the Friars got no closer than seven the rest of the way. Stony Brook hit .379 in the opening set led by five kills from Headen.
The Seawolves trailed 7-4 early in the second set but then went on a 12-3 run to take a 15-9 lead. Providence closed within 17-13 but Nelson answered with back-to-back kills and Strenger followed with a kill of her own to force a Providence timeout.
The Friars got within 23-18 but a Lauren Hendel service error and a block from freshman Kaitlin Costello (Webster, N.Y.) gave the Seawolves a 2-0 lead. SBU hit .419 in the second set led by five kills from Nelson and four from Headen.
Providence again jumped to an early lead in the third set, scoring five of the first six points. But the Seawolves rallied to tie the set at seven and eventually took an 11-10 lead on Nelson kill. Providence trailed just 16-14 following an Anne Powers kill but freshman Evann Slaughter (Clinton, Md.) responded with a kill to spark an 8-2 Stony Brook that got the Seawolves within a point of winning the match.
Nelson closed it out three points later with her 14th kill of the match. Junior Kelsey Sullivan (Hamilton, Va.) led the Seawolves with 22 assists while sophomore Corinne Perry (Northport, N.Y.) added 17. Lauren Fletcher had a team-high 13 kills for Providence, which hit .193 for match.
The Seawolves return to action next Sunday, hosting UMBC in their final regular season home match. Match is set for 12:30 p.m. Stony Brook will honor its two seniors- Jeanette Gibbs (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) and Headen- prior to the match.
