Final Stats

Vestal, N.Y. - Senior Ashley Headen (Alexandria, Va.) and freshman Evann Slaughter (Clinton, Md.) each recorded 15 kills but Anna Lejina tallied a game-high 21 kills to lead the Binghamton Bearcats to a 3-1 (25-17, 14-25, 25-21, 20=27) victory over the Stony Brook University volleyball team on Friday night.

The loss snapped a three-game losing streak for the Seawolves, which also got 18 digs from senior Jeanette Gibbs (Port Jefferson, N.Y.). Headen hit .353 while Slaughter hit .393 on her way to a career-high in kills. Junior Alicia Nelson (Apple Valley, Minn.) had 13 kills and eight digs.

The first set was close most of the way, with Stony Brook (11-16, 6-5 AE) trailing by just two, 16-14, following a kill from freshman Kaitlin Costello (Webster, N.Y.). But Lejina followed with a kill to spark an 8-1 Binghamton run that put the set away.

Stony Brook led 13-11 midway through the second set but then went on a 10-2 run, with the help of two kills from Slaughter, to take a 23-13 advantage. The Seawolves closed out the set a couple points later on a Binghamton attack error.

Set three was tight all the way as it featured 18 ties and seven lead changes. Neither team was able to take more than a one-point lead until a Slaughter kill put the Seawolves in front 20-18. But Binghamton (13-13, 8-3 AE) scored seven of the next eight points to take a 2-1 lead.

The fourth set was also tightly contested but It looked as if Stony Brook was in control after taking a 21-18 lead on another kill from Slaughter. Binghamton again rallied though, taking a 24-22 advantage on a kill from Michelle McDonough.

But the Seawolves tied it on a Nelson kill and block from Slaughter and sophomore Greta Strenger (Woodbury, Minn.). The Bearcats had three more match points with Stony Brook rallying to tie each time. But with the score tied at 27, the Bearcats scored two straight points to take the set and the match.

The Seawolves conclude the regular season on Sunday, traveling to take on Albany. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
