About the Game: Stony Brook is back at home to square off with the Sacred Heart Pioneers as both teams are coming off exciting one-point victories. The Seawolves topped Holy Cross on a last-second layup by Dave Coley, and SHU beat Hartford on a free throw with 0.2 seconds on the clock. This is the 17th all-time meeting between the two teams, and Sacred Heart leads the series 11-5. All five Stony Brook wins have come at home.
Scouting Sacred Heart: The Pioneers are 2-7 so far under head coach Dave Bike, who is in his 33rd season at the helm. Bike is three wins away from his 500th victory. Sacred Heart is 0-2 to start NEC play, having lost to Mount St. Mary’s and Wagner. This is the team’s third game this week, having lost at Lafayette and then coming back from 20 points down to beat Hartford on a last-second free throw. The backcourt tandem of Jerrell Thompson and Shane Gibson have combined to score 45 percent of the team’s points this season. Unfortunately, they also account for 36 percent of the team’s turnovers.
Last Time Out: Stony Brook trailed Holy Cross most of the game, but chipped away at the Crusaders lead and then Dave Coley hit the game-winning layup with 1.2 seconds remaining to give SBU a 54-53 victory. The Seawolves overcame a woeful first-half shooting performance (7-for-28) to wear down the Crusaders with strong defense and clutch shots from Coley and Bryan Dougher. Danny Carter led SBU with 10 points.
