About the Game: Stony Brook is looking to shake off a two-game losing streak by hitting the road, where it has won two straight. The Seawolves take on Columbia on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, where they have won four out of five contests played at Levien Gym. In the overall series, Stony Brook leads 6-4. Columbia is Stony Brook’s longest active Division I non-conference rival as the two teams have played in each of the last eight seasons and 11 of the last 12.
Scouting Columbia: The Lions are in their first season under head coach Kyle Smith, who most recently was the associate head coach at St. Mary’s. Smith has three returning starters from last season’s squad that went 11-17, 5-9 in the Ivy League. Smith has the Lions playing up-tempo offense, averaging 75.6 points a game. However, Columbia is also allowing 75.4 points a game. 6’3 junior guard Noruwa Agho is the team’s leading scorer at 17.3 PPG.
Last Time Out: Stony Brook blew a 14-point, second-half lead to Lehigh and ultimately lost to the Mountain Hawks 79-76 in overtime. The Seawolves took advantage of 22 Lehigh turnovers to score 29 points, but fell short at the free throw line where they were only 12-for-21 (57.1 percent). C.J. McCollum scored a game-high 31 points for the Mountain Hawks, including a layup with 35 seconds left in overtime that put Lehigh on top for good.
Last Time vs. Columbia: On Dec. 5, 2009, Stony Brook came back from a 12-point, second-half deficit by going on a 16-4 run and ultimately using defense and missed free throws to get past Columbia 63-60 at Pritchard Gym. Chris Martin led all scorers with 18 points, going 10-for-11 from the free throw line. Columbia was only 63.6 percent from the line and was 0-for-4 from the line and 2-for-9 from the field in the game’s final five minutes after SBU had come all the way back to tie.
