East Meadow, N.Y. - The Stony Brook swimming and diving teams completed a successful day two at the ECAC Open Championship on Saturday. The women's team currently sits in first place heading into Sunday, while the men are positioned fourth.
In Saturday's morning session, freshman Renee Deschenes (Winnipeg, Manitoba) set an ECAC Open record and a Stony Brook program record in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:04.04 to take first place. Deschenes was joined by three teammates in the top-10 as sophomore Christie Bodden (Panama City, Panama) took fifth, junior Deirdre Leong (Forest Hills, N.Y.) placed sixth and freshman Emily Cheng (Jericho, N.Y.) touched 10th.
Stony Brook also placed four in the top-10 in the women's 100 free. Junior Darcy Heuser (Centerville, Ohio) paced the Seawolves with a fourth-place finish in 52.69, while freshman Allison Zelnick (Troy, Ohio) placed fifth, sophomore Andjelija Sreckovic (Jagodina, Serbia) touched sixth and sophomore MaryKate Morcerf (Babylon, N.Y.) took 10th.
On the men's side, senior Lukasz Ochmanski (Lodz, Poland) prevailed in the 100 free with a time of 45.66. Junior Sean Conway (Oakdale, N.Y.) placed right behind Ochmanski in second (46.26), while senior Christopher Olwell (Floral Park, N.Y.) took 14th (48.01).
In the 200 butterfly competition, the women's team placed three in the top-10 as sophomore Julie Policht (Toronto, Ontario) touched fourth, junior Stephanie Gross (Fairport, N.Y.) took sixth and junior Mallory Breen (Quispamsis, New Brunswick) placed ninth. On the men's side, junior Daniel Kim (Douglaston, N.Y.) paced the team with a seventh-place finish.
Both Stony Brook 800 free relay teams took third to close out the morning session. The quartet of Heuser, Deschenes, Sreckovic and Zelnick completed the event in 7:45.91, while the men's team of Conway, Ochmanski, junior Ed McIntyre (Conway, N.Y.) and junior Zackery Good (Columbus, Ind.) finished in 7:08.11.
The evening session opened with successful performances from the 200 free relay teams as the women took second and the men placed fourth. Deschenes continued a stellar day with a second-place effort in the 100 backstroke, with Bodden touching seventh, Deirdre Leong placing eighth, Cheng taking ninth and freshman Keara Leong (Forest Hills, N.Y.) finishing 11th.
The 200 free saw Ochmanski claim another first-place finish as the senior smashed the previous ECAC Open record (1:43.06) by almost three seconds (1:40.51). On the women's side, Sreckovic placed fifth, while senior Adrienne Policht (Toronto, Ontario) took eighth.
In the 100 breaststroke, Reid and junior Taylor Crosby (Port Monmouth, N.J.) finished second and third, respectively, while Gross touched eighth. The women's squad was equally efficient in the 100 butterfly as Julie Policht battled to a third-place finish, Deschenes fought to a fifth-place standing and Gross to an eighth-place finish.
The day wound to a close with Crosby placing fourth in the 400 IM (4:39.71), senior Matthew McCort (Commack, N.Y.) taking seventh in the 100 fly (52.63) and Kim touching seventh in the 400 IM (4:17.72).
After two days and three sessions, the Seawolves lead on the women's side with a score of 1,185. SUNY Geneseo is in second with a score of 1,137.50, while the Stevens Institute of Technology is third with 1,134. On the men's side, Stevens leads the pack with 1,475.50; Stony Brook sits fourth with 514.50. The ECAC Open Championship will conclude on Sunday with action beginning at 10 a.m.
