About the Game: Stony Brook is looking to avoid its first four-game losing streak in three years as it takes on winless Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. Both teams are in need of a win as the Seawolves have lost three straight by a combined eight points, and Holy Cross has lost its first six games of the season. This is the second all-time meeting between the two teams, and Stony Brook won the first matchup 69-60 last year.
Scouting Holy Cross: The Crusaders are off to a rough start under first-year head coach Milan Brown. They have lost their first six games, five of them coming on the road. Holy Cross hasn’t had a home game since the season-opener on Nov. 13. The Crusaders are struggling with defense, allowing 70-plus points in four of six games, and opponents are shooting 48.2 percent from the field and 40.2 percent from three against them. On offense, HC has three scorers in double figures, led by Devin Brown, who is averaging 13.8 PPG.
Last Time Out: Stony Brook built an 18-point lead in the first half of last Saturday’s game at Columbia, but the Lions used 11 three-pointers to get back into the game, and John Daniels sank a free throw with 2.7 seconds left to lift Columbia to a 73-72 win over the Seawolves. Stony Brook shot a season-high 49.1 percent, but the Lions outrebounded SBU 40-28, which turned into 14 second-chance points. Bryan Dougher and Danny Carter each had 13 points to lead SBU.
Last Time vs. Holy Cross: On Dec. 31, 2009, Stony Brook forced 18 Holy Cross turnovers and received 18 points from both Bryan Dougher and Tommy Brenton in a 69-60 win over the Crusaders at Pritchard Gymnasium. Brenton’s 18 was a career high and he added 11 rebounds for a double-double. Dougher was a blistering 7-for-9 from the field with four triples. SBU got out to an 11-0 start and led the entire game. Andrew Keister led the Crusaders with 13 points and 18 rebounds.
