Dec. 9, 2010

Sophomore midfielder Leonardo Fernandes (North Babylon, N.Y.) of the Stony Brook men's soccer team has been named to the NSCAA All-Northeast Region third team. He becomes the eighth All-Region selection in program history.

Fernandes had a prolific 2010 season, scoring six goals and adding an assist for 13 points, which ranked second on the Seawolves and ninth in America East. In addition to his scoring abilities, Fernandes also proved to be a skilled ball handler and was honored as the 2010 America East Midfielder of the Year and first-team All-America East.

Fernandes is the first Seawolves player to earn All-Region honors since Michael Palacio was named second-team All-Northeast Region in 2006. In 36 career games, Fernandes has 13 goals and three assists for 29 points.

Fernandes and the Seawolves enjoyed a successful 2010 season that saw the team go 10-7-3 and reach the semifinals of the America East Championship for the second straight season. Under seventh-year head coach Cesar Markovic, Stony Brook has won America East championships twice over the last six seasons. Fernandes will be among the top four Seawolves scorers that will return in 2011.
