Softball Loses to Coastal Carolina, 2-0, In Extra Innings

March 7, 2010

Box Score

Raleigh, N.C. - A one out home run in the bottom of the eight inning by Coastal Carolina's Michele Evans gave the Chanticleers a 2-0 (8) victory over Stony Brook University's softball team on Sunday afternoon. Senior Alyssa Struzenberg (Cooper City, Fla.) recorded eight strikeouts in 7.1 innings of work, allowing just four hits all game. With the loss, Stony Brook is now 3-6 on the season.

Despite recording just three hits all game, Stony Brook had three opportunities to score over the first seven innings of play. Senior Vicki Kavitsky (Cherry Hill, N.J.) led the game off with a hit-by-pitch and advanced to third on a stolen base and a fielder's choice. However, a groundout and a strikeout left her stranded.

Stony Brook's best bet to score came in the fifth inning with junior Brijette Martin (New York, N.Y.) singled through the left side with one out. An error and a single by senior Jade Clare (Federal Way, Wash.) loaded the bases, but Coastal's Ashley Frederick induced a grounder back to the mound for the second out and then recorded one of her three strikeouts on the day to keep the score 0-0.

A leadoff single in the top of the seventh by freshman Taylor Chain (Gloucester, N.J.) gave the Seawolves its final scoring chance of the game, but once against Frederick would strand a runner on third to setup the game-winning homer in the bottom of the eighth.

Stony Brook will travel to Tampa, Fla. next weekend to compete against Southern Illinois, Penn State, Kennesaw State, Toledo and Ball State.
