Box Score

Wilmington, N.C. - Stony Brook University's baseball team dropped a pair of games on Sunday at Brooks Field, first falling to Akron, 7-0, before dropping an 11-3 decision to UNC-Wilmington. With the two losses, the Seawolves record falls to 2-2.

Akron jumped on the Seawolves early as Drew Turcoy singled with one out in the first and Jake Plata then followed with a home run to right to give the Zips a 2-0 lead. Stony Brook freshman starter Adam Brown (Melville, N.Y.) settled down after that though, throwing four straight scoreless frames to keep SBU within striking distance.

But the Zips broke open the game in the sixth against the SBU bullpen, loading the bases with one out. Kevin Haas then walked to force in a run and Turcoy followed with a three-run double to make it 6-0. Benjamin Danziger picked up the win for Akron, hurling a five-hit shutout.

The Seawolves grabbed an early lead against UNC-Wilmington. Sophomore Pat Cantwell (West Islip, N.Y) singled with one out in the top of first and moved to third on a single from senior Michael Stephan (Patchogue, N.Y.). Senior Rob Dyer (Selden, N.Y) then drove a sacrifice fly to right to give SBU a 1-0 lead.

But the Seahawks answered back with six runs in the bottom of the first highlighted by a two-run single from Andrew Cain and a two-run triple from Ben Thielsen. Stony Brook got a run back in the second as freshmen Maxx Tissenbaum (Toronto, Ontario) and William Carmona (Hempstead, N.Y.) singled with one out.

Tissenbaum and Carmona then moved to second and third, respectively, on a Seahawk error before Tissenbaum scored on a RBI fielder's choice from junior Chad Marshall (Paris, Ontario).

UNC-Wilmington pushed its lead to 7-2 on an Alex Hill sacrifice fly in the third. SBU scored a run in the fourth on a Cantwell RBI single but the Seahawks scored two runs each in the fifth and sixth to put the game away.

Seth Frankoff picked up the win for UNC-Wilmington, hurling 3.0 innings of scoreless relief. Cantwell led SBU with two hits in three at-bats.

The Seawolves return to action on Friday, traveling to take on Alabama for the start of a four-game series. First pitch is set for 7:35 p.m.
