Final Stats

New Rochelle, N.Y. - Stony Brook University's women's soccer team out-shot the Iona Gaels, 14-11, and freshman goalkeeper Chelsea Morales (Temecula, Calif.) made six saves but Abby Dixon's goal in the 34th minute proved to be the difference as the Gaels defeated Stony Brook, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Mazzella Field.

Stony Brook (0-3-0) nearly took the lead in the 22nd minute as freshman Julianne Palm (Stilwell, Kansas) took a free kick from 35 yards out that hit the crossbar. Iona then scored the only goal of the day just over 12 minutes later as Dixon put in a rebound of a Lauren Machtel shot. The goal also came a little over 11 minutes after junior Holly Razzaghi (Bloomsburg, Pa.) was sent off with a red card, forcing the Seawolves to play with 10 players for the rest of the game.

The Gaels took the 1-0 lead into halftime, with Morales making five stops in the opening 45 minutes. Stony Brook out-shot Iona, 9-6, in the first half and also held a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks.

SBU kept the pressure on early in the second half, with junior Dominique Adamo (Ramsey, N.J.) getting free on a breakaway. But Iona keeper Trista Rivera was able to come out and make the save.

Rivera and the Gaels were able to keep Stony Brook off the board the rest of the way, holding on for the one-goal victory. Rivera finished the game with four saves, three in the second half.

The Seawolves return to action on Friday, hosting Marist at LaValle Stadium. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
