Sophomore forward Leonardo Fernandes (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) of the Stony Brook men’s soccer team has been named the America East Player of the Week for his seven-point weekend that helped the Seawolves to a pair of victories, the conference announced Monday.
Fernandes, the reigning 2009 America East Rookie of the Year, scored three goals and added an assist in two matches this past weekend in wins over Central Connecticut State and Bryant. Against the Blue Devils Friday night, Fernandes notched an assist on the game’s first goal and then scored on a penalty kick in the 71st minute. He followed that up with both of Stony Brook’s goals in a 2-1 triumph over the Bulldogs Sunday. His 74th minute free kick goal from 20 yards out proved to be the game-winner.
The three tallies were the first of the year for Fernandes, who has shot up to fifth in America East in goals and seventh in total points.
Fernandes now has 10 career goals in just 24 games played. Last season, he posted a team-best seven goals and 16 points en route to second-team All-America East honors as a freshman. He also helped Stony Brook secure its second-ever America East championship with a goal in the title game against UMBC.
Fernandes and the Seawolves next play on Friday when they host nationally ranked Harvard at LaValle Stadium at 7 p.m.
