About the Game: Stony Brook looks for a second straight victory and looks to move up the America East standings as it hosts UMBC. A Seawolves win will tie them with Albany for fifth place and get them within a game of Boston University for third place. This is the 19th all-time meeting, and the Seawolves lead the series 10-8 and have won five straight over the Retrievers.
Scouting UMBC: The Retrievers have gone 2-5 since Stony Brook defeated them on Jan. 2, having beaten Boston University and Hartford, but most recently falling to New Hampshire and Albany. Chris De La Rosa continues to make his case for the moniker of top point guard in America East as he is averaging 16.9 PPG, 6.4 APG and 4.4 RPG. He has 39 more assists than anyone else in the league. In eight conference games, he is sporting a 2.1 assist/turnover ratio while shooting 46 percent from the field. UMBC is still struggling with defense, giving up a league-worst 79.1 PPG. Eleven times this season, the Retrievers have allowed 80-plus points in a game.
Last Time Out: Stony Brook held Hartford to only 35 points and 24 percent shooting while outscoring the Hawks 41-15 in the second half of a 69-35 rout at Pritchard Gym. The 35 points allowed were the fewest Stony Brook has given up in its Division I era. The Seawolves connected on a season-high 11 three-pointers, led by Bryan Dougher’s five. He and Leonard Hayes each finished with 15 points.
Last Time vs. UMBC: On Jan. 2, 2011, the Seawolves jumped out to a big lead on the Retrievers and then held off a second-half UMBC rally thanks in large part to Danny Carter in a 64-56 win in Baltimore. With UMBC threatening and coming within one point of Stony Brook, Danny Carter hit a pair of three-pointers to silence the Retrievers and hold on for victory. Carter finished with 10 points, and Marcus Rouse had 17.
