Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook University volleyball team hit a season-high .356 on its way to a third straight win, a 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-22) triumph over the Providence Friars on Sunday afternoon at Pritchard Gymnasium. Sophomore Evann Slaughter(Clinton, Md.) led the Seawolves with 14 kills.
Slaughter hit .429 and had three service aces while senior Alicia Nelson (Apple Valley, Minn.) chipped in with 12 kills and 10 digs. Freshman Taylor Gillie(Fort Wayne, Ind.) tied a career-high with nine kills on a .533 attack percentage.
Senior Kelsey Sullivan (Hamilton, Va.) orchestrated the offense and finished with 43 assists. Freshman Laura Hathaway(Warsaw, N.Y.) led Stony Brook with 16 digs.
The Seawolves (11-9, 4-2 AE) controlled play right from the start, jumping to an 11-4 lead in the opening set. Providence (6-17, 1-5 AE) got no closer than six the rest of the way as SBU took a 1-0 advantage.
Stony Brook again grabbed a big lead in the second set, scoring the first six points. Providence scored five of the next six points but the Seawolves slowly began to pull away before going on to the 10-point victory. SBU hit .353 in the set as Slaughter and Nelson combined for 11 kills.
Providence led 10-8 early in the third set following back-to-back kills from Colleen McCollom before Stony Brook ran off six straight points to take a four-point advantage. The Friars cut the lead to one with three straight points and still trailed by only one at 18-17 after an SBU attack error.
But the Seawolves scored three straight points out of a timeout and Providence got no closer than two the rest of the way. Slaughter closed out the set and match with her 14th kill of the day.
Stony Brook held Providence to a .160 attack percentage and no player tallied more than six kills. SBU is hitting .346 over its last two matches.
The Seawolves return to action on Saturday, hosting UMBC at Pritchard Gymnasium. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
