Junior Nini Lagvilava (Tbilisi, Georgia) advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2011 USTA/ITA Division I Women's Northeast Regional Championship on Sunday with a pair of victories. She is first player in program history, men's or women's, to advance to the quarterfinals of the Northeast Regionals.
In her first match on Sunday, Lagvilava defeated Aleksandra Ion of Brown 6-3, 6-4 in the Round of 32. Seeded No. 13, she then knocked off the No. 2 seed, Anna Rapoport of Fairleigh Dickinson, in straight sets (6-4, 6-3) to advance to the quarterfinals.
Lagvilava received a bye to the Round of 64 and beat Laura Wiley of Brown, 6-1, 6-1, on Saturday to advance to the Round of 32. She will face Hanna Yu of Yale in her quarterfinal match on Monday at 11:45 a.m.
Junior Chloe Pike (Bristol England) qualified for the main singles draw with a straight sets win over Joana Sun of Marist and a three-set victory over Daniela DePaoli of Penn. Senior Katherine Hanson (Smithtown, N.Y.) advanced to the Round of 64 with a victory over Marissa Brossard of St. Bonaventure before falling to the No. 5 seed, Erina Kikuchi of Boston College.
In doubles action, the duos of Pike and Hanson and Lagvilava and freshman Polina Movchan (Kiev, Ukraine) each won their Round of 64 matches. But each was eliminated in the Round of 32.
