South Orange, N.J. -
Stony Brook University's women's basketball team trailed by just nine at halftime but the Seton Hall Pirates shot 59 percent in the second half on its way to a 65-30 victory over the Seawolves on Saturday at Walsh Gymnasium.
"Our defense and intensity in the first half was outstanding," Stony Brook head coach Beth O'Boyle said. "But give Seton Hall credit, they made shots in the second half and just weren't able to execute on the offensive end the way we need to."
Senior Destiny Jacobs (Glen Burnie, Md.) led Stony Brook (1-10) with eight points and seven rebounds. Senior Whitney Davis (Muskegon, Mich.) added seven points for the Seawolves.
Stony Brook fell behind 8-2 early, but then held the Pirates without a field goal over five minutes. The Seawolves scored six straight points during that stretch, tying the game at eight on a Jacobs lay-up with 12:57 left.
The Seawolves trailed just 13-12 with 8:24 to go in the first half following another Jacobs hoop. But Brittany Morris and Jasmine Crew answered with back-to-back threes to kick start a 10-2 half-ending run as Seton Hall took a 23-14 lead into the break.
Stony Brook shot 41.2 percent in the opening half while holding the Pirates to just 33.3 percent shooting. But SHU scored nine points off 11 Seawolves turnovers and owned a 17-9 advantage on the glass.
Seton Hall scored seven of the first 10 points of the second half to take a 13-point lead before Davis converted a three-point play to get SBU within 30-20 just over four minutes into the half.
But the Pirates ran off 17 of the next 18 points, taking a 47-21 lead on a three-point play from Morris midway through the half. Gatling hit two free throws to end the Seton Hall run and Jacobs then followed with a baseline jumper.
Morris answered though with her third three of the game to push its lead back to 25. The Seawolves would get no closer than 24 the rest of the way.
Morris led five Piratse in double-figures with 19 points while Tajay Ashmeade had 12 points and 17 rebounds.
The Seawolves return to action on Wednesday, hosting Morgan State at Pritchard Gymnasium. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
