Juniors Leonardo Fernandes (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Berian Gobeil Cruz (Montreal, Quebec) were both named NSCAA All-Northeast Region Friday after spectacular 2011 seasons as the Stony Brook men's soccer team's top goal scorers. Fernandes was named to the first team, and Gobeil Cruz was named to the third team.
Fernandes, who is the two-time reigning America East Midfielder of the Year, led America East and the Seawolves with nine goals and seven assists for 25 points. He was also the America East Championship's Most Outstanding Player after putting up three goals and two assists en route to leading the Seawolves to the conference title and automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. His five-point performance in the tournament final vs. Hartford set a new conference mark. Fernandes has now been named All-Northeast region two seasons in a row. In 2010, he was a member of the third team.
Gobeil Cruz, who was named the 2011 America East Striker of the Year, had seven goals and three assists for 17 points this season. He had three-game winning goals en route to being named first-team All-America East. His seven goals ranked him second in the league and on the team.
Fernandes and Gobeil Cruz combined to score 52 percent of Stony Brook's goals and 53 percent of the team's assists.
Stony Brook, under first-year head coach Ryan Anatol, won the 2011 America East Championship, the program's third conference title since joining the league in 2001, third title over the last seven seasons and second title in just the last three seasons. The team advanced to the NCAA Tournament and lost in the first round to Monmouth in penalty kicks after playing to a scoreless draw. Stony Brook finished with a 10-6-4 record and will return 94 percent of its goal scoring in 2012.
