Nelson named to America East All-Academic team

Dec. 9, 2011

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Senior outside hitter Alicia Nelson (Apple Valley, Minn.) has been named to the America East All-Academic team, the conference office announced on Friday.

The 2011 America East Player of the Year, Nelson led the conference in kills per set (4.39) and points per set (4.93). Named honorable mention All-Northeast Region by the AVCA earlier this week, Nelson had 13 double-doubles and recorded double-digit kills in all but three matches.

Nelson became the eight player in program history to pass 1,000 career kills earlier this season at Bucknell and ranked 21st in the country in kills per set and points per set. She also led the Seawolves to the America East finals for the first time since 2007.

All-Academic squads for team sports are based on the maximum number of athletes that participate in a contest at one time (e.g., 7 on the court in volleyball) but can be more if there is a tie in voting.

To be nominated for the distinction, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve for their team and participate in at least 50 percent of their team's games or competitions.

In the classroom, student-athletes must have a 3.30 GPA and have completed at least one calendar year at their institution. Freshmen are not eligible for consideration.
