About the Game: The Seawolves take a break from the rigors of America East play to challenge the Manhattan Jaspers of the MAAC in a game sponsored by ESPN BracketBusters. This matchup came as a result of both teams entering ESPN’s 114-team pool last summer. Stony Brook will return the game on Manhattan’s campus either in 2011-12 or 2012-13. This is the first all-time meeting between these two schools although they are separated by only 56 miles. SBU does have history with members of the MAAC, going 5-6 all-time against teams in the league. The last MAAC team SBU played was St. Peter’s, beating the Peacocks in 2008 and losing to them in 2009.

Scouting Manhattan: The Jaspers are struggling through a tough season this year that included a 15-game losing streak. However, this is a program that went to postseason as recently as 2006 (earned an NIT berth and advanced to the third round) and reached the NCAAs and won a first-round game in 2004. Manhattan is only averaging 59.6 PPG and has only topped 60 points nine times this year. Their offense tends to go as George Beamon takes them. Beamon, a native of Roslyn, N.Y., is averaging 15.9 PPG. Also one to watch is Rhamel Brown, who ranks in the top 100 in the nation in rebounds and blocks. Manhattan a boasts a ton of size; the average Jasper is 6-5, 203 pounds, and eight of them are 6-6 or taller.

Last Time Out: Stony Brook stumbled with its shooting at Albany last Monday, making only 17 field goals in a 58-43 loss to the Great Danes. The Seawolves were down only one at halftime, but Albany had two separate 11-2 runs to pull away in the second half. Stony Brook was also outrebounded 39-30. Leonard Hayes led the Seawolves with 18 points on 7-of-16 shooting. Tim Ambrose was Albany’s only scorer in double figures, but he put up 22 points on 7-of-12 from the field.
