Quinnipiac Box Score
Longwood Box Score
Farmville, Va. - The Stony Brook softball team dropped a pair of games on Sunday at the Longwood Classic, falling to Quinnipiac, 8-2, in the morning and Longwood, 7-0, in the afternoon to wrap up the weekend with a 1-3 record.
Senior Colleen Matthes (Severn, Md.) pitched two complete games for the Seawolves after pitching all 14 innings for Stony Brook on Saturday. In the first game against Quinnipiac (3-4), Matthes fanned six batters, but could not work out of a jam in the top of the fourth, when the Bobcats plated four runs to open up a 7-0 lead. The Seawolves responded with two unearned runs, one in the fourth and one in the fifth, to cut the deficit, but could not fight all the way back against Quinnipiac starter Katie Alfiere.
Stony Brook scored its first run on an RBI single by junior Suzanne Karath (Fishkill, N.Y.), plating freshman Elise Fortier (Coventry, R.I.) who had reached on an error. The Seawolves struck again the following inning after back-to-back singles by juniors Alyssa Hawley (Spokane, Wash.) and Lauren Maloney (Las Vegas, Nev.). After a pair of groundouts, Hawley was able to scamper home on a fielding error to make it 7-2.
Quinnipiac, which committed five errors on the day, was able to respond in the seventh to round out the scoring when Jordan Paolucci took Matthes deep to left field to put the Bobcats up 8-2.
In the second game of the day, Stony Brook was again stymied by Longwood pitcher Briana Wells. Wells, who no-hit the Seawolves on Saturday, went the distance once again and allowed just one hit (Fortier single) in the game.
Matthes pitched brilliantly through the first five innings, limiting the potent Longwood (7-0) offense to just one run and two hits. But the floodgates were flung open in the bottom of the sixth, when the Lancers plated six runs on five hits to put the game out of doubt, 7-0. With the defeat, Matthes fell to 1-3 on the season, while Wells improved to 6-0.
Stony Brook returns to action next weekend when they travel to Boca Raton, Fla. for the Florida Atlantic Tournament. On March 4, the Seawolves will face Seton Hall and Providence, before squaring off against Harvard and host Florida Atlantic the following day. The tournament will then come to a close on Sunday against SEC-foe South Carolina.
