About the Game: The Seawolves look to gain some momentum heading into their nationally televised home game on Saturday by going for a win at New Hampshire in what will be a stiff defensive battle. This is a matchup between two of the top 30 defensive teams in the country in terms of scoring and field goal percentage defense. It’s also the 22nd all-time meeting, and UNH leads the series 14-7. SBU is looking to break a seven-game losing streak at Lundholm Gym.
Scouting UNH: The Wildcats are on a bit of a roll, winning three of their last four to move into fifth place. UNH continues to play outstanding defense, holding America East opponents to only 59.8 points per game, and no team has put 70 points on them since VCU on Dec. 30. Thanks to injuries to Alvin Abreu and Ferg Myrick, the Wildcats only go seven or eight deep and heavily rely on Tyrone Conley for scoring. He is accounting for 30 percent of the team’s points during conference play and is averaging 17.3 PPG in 12 America East contests. UNH plays a lot of tight games and is 7-2 in contests decided by five points or less.
Last Time Out: The Seawolves committed a season-high 24 turnovers that led to 22 Catamount points in a 65-42 loss at Vermont. Leonard Hayes led Stony Brook with 12 points.
Last Time vs. UNH: On Jan. 15, the Seawolves and Wildcats could not decide a winner in regulation, going into double overtime. Stony Brook had scored only 16 points in the game’s first 30 minutes until an offensive explosion got them into overtime and then on top of UNH 64-60. The Seawolves got timely free throws and blocks to get into double overtime, where Anthony Mayo hit back-to-back baskets to jumpstart the Seawolves to victory. Marcus Rouse led SBU with 13 points, including three critical free throws that forced the second OT. Tyrone Conley led UNH with 14 points, but was only 5-for-24 from the field.
