Baseball heads South for Bo Jangles Baseball Classic

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Stony Brook University's baseball team heads South for the second straight weekend, traveling to Rock Hill, S.C. for the Bo Jangles Classic. The Seawolves will face off against Michigan and host Winthrop once each on both Saturday and Sunday.

Last Time Out
Stony Brook had six players record two or more RBI as the Seawolves routed Fairleigh Dickinson, 16-7, in their home opener on Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore William Carmona (Hempstead, N.Y.) led Stony Brook with three hits and three RBI.

The Seawolves totaled a season-high 17 hits and drew eight walks. Senior Stephen Marino (Lake Grove, N.Y.) and junior Pat Cantwell (West Islip, N.Y.) added three hits each for SBU. Sophomore Jasvir Rakkar (Brampton, Ontario) allowed one run in 3.0 innings of relief to earn the win.

Scouting Winthrop
Winthrop (5-5) went 3-0 last weekend hosting the 2011 Coca-Cola Classic against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Manhattan Jaspers at Winthrop Ballpark. The Eagles picked up two victories over the Fighting Irish and one against the Jaspers.

Playing for first year head coach Tom Riginos, the Eagles were picked to finish third in the Big South Preseason Coaches Poll. Senior catcher Eddie Rohan is hitting a team-best .432 with eight RBI through the first 10 games. The 2010 All-Big South second team selection also leads Winthrop in doubles (four) and runs scored (10).

The Eagles are averaging 7.6 runs per game and scored 21 runs in the three games last weekend.

Scouting Michigan
Michigan (2-9) is coming off a 2-2 weekend at the Henson Family Dealership/First National Bank of Huntsville Baseball Tournament in Huntsville, Texas, defeating Massachusetts twice while falling to Sam Houston State on two occasions. The two victories were the first of the year for the Wolverines, who dropped their first seven games of the season.

Freshman outfielder Michael O'Neill has had an impressive start to his Michigan career, recording a hit in all 11 games. He leads Michigan with a .386 batting average, 17 hits and five stolen bases. O'Neill also has a .417 on- base percentage and three outfield assists.

Michigan was picked to finish second in the Big Ten's inaugural preseason coaches' poll, released on Feb. 15. This weekend's games continue an 18-game season-opening road trip for the Wolverines.
