Raleigh, N.C. - The Stony Brook softball team slugged three homeruns, including two in the seventh inning, to down ACC-foe North Carolina State on Friday in Raleigh, N.C. Sophomore Taylor Chain (Gloucester, N.J.), freshman Jessica Combs (Hammonton, N.J.) and junior Lauren Maloney (Las Vegas, Nev.) went deep for Stony Brook, which evened its record to 1-1 on the day after a 4-1 defeat to Fairfield in the morning.
Senior Colleen Matthes (Severn, Md.) pitched a complete game and struck out a season-high seven batters against the Wolfpack to earn her second win of the season.
The Seawolves (3-8) went ahead in the top of the second when sophomore Shannon O'Shea (Lake Worth, Fla.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run with only one out. Stony Brook could no further damage in the frame, however, as pitcher Kayla Cox (12 strikeouts) worked out of the jam with a strikeout and a groundout.
NC State (7-10) responded with three consecutive runs to go ahead 3-1 after three, but Chain answered right back, taking Cox deep in the top of the fourth to cut the deficit to 3-2.
The lead held into the top of the seventh, when the Seawolves' bats ignited. Combs led off the inning with her first-career homerun, crushing the ball over the left-center field wall to tie the game at 3-3. Maloney then stepped into the batter's box and ripped her first homerun in a Stony Brook uniform to left-center to give the Seawolves the lead for good.
The Wolfpack did not go quietly as they forced the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, but Matthes got out of trouble with a big strikeout and a grounder to shortstop to end the game.
In the first game of the day against Fairfield, Stony Brook scored its lone run on an RBI double by junior Bernadette Tenuto (Audubon, N.J.) in the third inning, which plated junior Alyssa Hawley (Spokane, Wash.). The Seawolves were unable to get another run home, despite getting multi-hit performances from Tenuto (2-for-3), Hawley (2-for-3) and freshman Elise Fortier (Coventry, R.I.), who also went 2-for-3.
Stony Brook will return to action tomorrow when it wraps up the NC State Wolfpack Challenge against Charleston Southern at 10 a.m. and James Madison at 2:30 p.m.
