Tropeano received run support in the first inning as junior Pat Cantwell (West Islip, N.Y.) and senior Chad Marshall (Paris, Ontario) led off with singles. Sophomore William Carmona (Hempstead, N.Y.) followed with an RBI single, scoring Cantwell and advancing Marshall to third. Sophomore Maxx Tissenbaum (Toronto, Ontario) grounded into a double play but Marshall scored, giving the Seawolves a 2-0 lead.
Tropeano was simply brilliant, striking out 10 while lowering his ERA to 1.37. He retired the side in order in six of his eight innings and ran into slight trouble once. In Michigan's half of the fifth, the Wolverines had runners on first and third after a single and a double, but Tropeano got Adam Robinson looking to end the inning.
Sophomore Tanner Nivins (Kitchener, Ontario) scored on a passed ball in the second inning.
After allowing a ninth inning run, Carmona induced a double play and a ground out for his first save of the season.
In the second game of the day, Stony Brook got going early again, loading the bases in the first inning. Senior Stephen Marino (Lake Grove, N.Y.) hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Marshall. Sophomore Travis Jankowski (Lancaster, Pa.) reached safely on an error, scoring Carmona.
After Winthrop rallied, taking a 3-2 lead, Stony Brook pushed runs across in fifth and sixth. Freshman Joshua Mason (Woodland Hills, Calif.) led off the fifth with a single and advanced to second on a ground out. After Carmona walked, Tissenbaum singled to center, scoring Mason and tying the game at three.
Freshman Brandon McNitt (Chino Hills, Calif.) took over for junior Tyler Johnson (Chatsworth, Calif.) in the sixth and kept the Eagles off the board for the next four innings.
With one out, Nivins walked and moved to second on a ground out. Mason singled to center on the first pitch, scoring Nivins and driving home the eventual game-winning RBI.
Winthrop had one more chance in the ninth. Adam Gliebe led the inning off with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. McNitt threw a wild pitch and Gliebe moved to third, but Cantwell got the ball and threw to McNitt, who tagged Gliebe as he was trying to score for the second out of the inning. McNitt picked up the Seawolves' second save of the day, inducing a fly out.
The Seawolves and Wolverines get underway at 10:30 a.m. followed by a rematch with the Eagles at 2:00 p.m.
