Rock Hill, S.C. - Making his first career start, freshman Frankie Vanderka (Levittown, N.Y.) hurled 6.0 shutout innings to lead the Stony Brook University baseball team to a 3-1 win over Michigan on Sunday at the Bo Jangles Baseball Classic hosted by Winthrop University.

SBU held on for a 10-9 win over the host Eagles in the second game of the day. The sweep of the doubleheader completed a perfect 4-0 weekend for the Seawolves at the Bo Jangles Classic. Stony Brook has won five straight and is now 7-4 on the season.

Vanderka allowed just four hits and two walks while striking out five. Sophomore G.C. Yerry (West Shokan, N.Y.) pitched the final 1.2 innings to earn the save.

The Seawolves took a 1-0 lead in the fourth as sophomore Maxx Tissenbaum (Toronto, Ontario) walked with one out and then moved to second on a single from senior Stephen Marino (Lake Grove, N.Y.). Tissenbaum scored on a two-out single from sophomore Travis Jankowski (Lancaster, Pa.).

Vanderka, meanwhile, cruised through his 6.0 innings as he did not allow a runner past second base. The Seawolves tacked on a run in the sixth on a run-scoring single from sophomore Tanner Nivins (Kitchener, Ontario).

Michigan got on the board in the seventh as Michael O'Neill led off the inning with a home run of freshman reliever Bryan Tatelman (South Windsor, Conn.). The Wolverines loaded the bases with one out in the eighth but Yerry came in and struck out Patrick Biondi before getting O'Neill to foul out to end the threat.

SBU tacked on a run in the bottom of the inning as Tissenbaum singled with one out and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch. Yerry then pitched a perfect ninth to secure the victory.

The Seawolves jumped to an early lead against Winthrop on a run-scoring single from Nivins and a bases loaded walk to Jankowski. The Eagles answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning but SBU jumped back in front with two runs in the third on a sacrifice fly from Marino and an RBI single from Jankowski.

Winthrop scored three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 6-4 lead before the Seawolves tied it with two runs in the sixth. Stony Brook took advantage of two Winthrop errors to score four runs in the seventh and take a 10-6 lead.

The Eagles scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh and then loaded the bases with one out in the ninth. Cam Walters followed with a run-scoring single to bring the Eagles within one.

But sophomore reliever William Carmona (Hempstead, N.Y.), who entered the game in the seventh, got Adam Gliebe to ground into a 4-6-3 double play to end the game. Yerry allowed two runs on two hits in 4.1 innings of relief to earn the win for the Seawolves.

Marino, Nivins and Jankowski each drove in two runs against Winthrop. Tissenbaum had two hits and scored three runs. He hit .364 (4-for-11) for the weekend and scored six runs.
