Cambridge, Mass. - A pair of Stony Brook softball players were honored by the America East on Monday as freshman Elise Fortier (Coventry, R.I.) was named the conference's Rookie of the Week, while senior Colleen Matthes (Severn, Md.) garnered Pitcher of the Week honors.
Both players were instrumental in the Seawolves' success over the weekend at the NC State Wolfpack Challenge as Stony Brook posted a 3-1 record with victories over ACC-foe NC State, Charleston Southern and James Madison.
Matthes pitched a complete-game against the Wolfpack on Friday, limiting the NC State offense to five hits, while striking out seven and allowing only one earned run in a 4-3 Seawolves win. Matthes came back the next day to shut down James Madison with another complete game effort, highlighted by six strikeouts and just two earned runs as Stony Brook carried the day, 4-2. On the weekend, Matthes pitched 16 innings and registered a 1.31 ERA as opponents hit just .161 against the senior hurler.
Fortier was immaculate at the plate and on defense at third base for Stony Brook. The freshman started off the weekend with a 2-for-3 effort (two doubles) against Fairfield. Fortier followed with a 2-for-4 performance against Charleston Southern, including an RBI double and a run scored. The Coventry, R.I. native then capped the weekend with a 1-for-2 day against James Madison with another RBI double and a run scored. Fortier posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage at the hot corner in four games, while hitting .417 (5-for-12) and slugging at a .667 clip.
The Seawolves (5-8) will open the home portion of their schedule this weekend when they host the Stony Brook Invitational on March 19-20. Stony Brook will face Fairfield and Holy Cross twice each over the weekend.
