Cambridge, Mass. - Freshman Elise Fortier (Coventry, R.I.) was named the America East Rookie of the Week on Monday, taking home the honor for the second straight week. Fortier batted .333 in four games at the Stony Brook Invitational and hit a pair of two-run homeruns.
Fortier was instrumental in two come-from-behind victories on Sunday against Fairfield and Holy Cross. In the game against Fairfield, the Seawolves trailed 4-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh, before Fortier smacked a two-run bomb to left-center to tie the game at 4-4. Stony Brook won the game later in the inning on a walk-off single by junior Lauren Maloney (Las Vegas, Nev.), scoring the final five runs of the game to win 5-4.
In Stony Brook's next game against Holy Cross, Fortier again hit a two-run shot, this time in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Seawolves' deficit to 3-2. Stony Brook came back to win yet again with a run in the bottom of the seventh courtesy of a Suzanne Karath (Fishkill, N.Y.) single and a run in the bottom of the ninth on a Samantha Rossi (Marlton, N.J.) squeeze bunt.
For the weekend, Fortier recorded four RBI, scored three runs and posted an .867 slugging percentage. In 17 games this season, the freshman leads the team with seven doubles and is tied for the team lead in homeruns (2) and RBI (7).
Stony Brook (8-9) returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Monmouth for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
