Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook softball team will open America East play this weekend when it hosts rival Boston University for a three-game series starting on Saturday at 1 p.m. Winners of six of their last seven games, the Seawolves will be looking to avenge last season's conference final loss to the Terriers.
At the plate, Stony Brook is led by junior Bernadette Tenuto (Audubon, N.J.), who has two HR and seven RBI this season. Freshman Elise Fortier (Coventry, R.I.), the two-time reigning America East Rookie of the Week, also has two HR and seven RBI this season. Senior Colleen Matthes (Severn, Md.) leads the team with a 3.24 ERA and a conference-high 68 strikeouts.
Boston University
The Terriers enter with a 12-8 record and have won two of their last three games. Senior April Setterlund has amassed impressive offensive numbers thus far, batting .389 with five HR, 20 RBI and 14 stolen bases. The Terriers have excelled in the circle, posting a 2.02 team ERA. Erin Schuppert (0.98 ERA), Whitney Tuthill (1.57 ERA) and Holli Floetker (1.96 ERA) all have four wins and have pitched at least 35 innings each.
Last Time Out
The Seawolves won three of four games at the Stony Brook Invitational last weekend, downing Fairfield and Holy Cross (twice). On Sunday, the Seawolves staged two dramatic, come-from-behind victories thanks to late-inning heroics. Stony Brook trailed Fairfield by a 4-0 score, but scored the final five runs of the game, including three in the bottom of the seventh to win 5-4. Fortier (Coventry, R.I.) smacked a two-run HR in the seventh to tie the game at 4-4, before junior Lauren Maloney (Las Vegas, Nev.) singled home the winning run. Against Holy Cross, Fortier again delivered with a two-run shot to cut a 3-0 deficit to 3-2 in the sixth, before Stony Brook tied it in the seventh with a Suzie Karath (Fishkill, N.Y.) single and won it in the ninth on a Samantha Rossi (Marlton, N.J.) squeeze bunt.
