Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Stony Brook softball team returns to the field for a pair of doubleheaders this week, hosting Sacred Heart for two games on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. and Iona for two games on Thursday at 2 p.m.
The Seawolves (8-12) will look to snap a three-game losing streak heading into a week in which they will play seven home games. Freshman Jess Combs (Hammonton, N.J.) leads the Seawolves’ offense with a .310 batting average, while junior Bernadette Tenuto (Audubon, N.J.) and Elise Fortier (Coventry, R.I.) lead the team with seven RBI each. Senior pitcher Colleen Matthes (Severn, Md.) leads all America East hurlers with 72 strikeouts this season.
Sacred Heart
The Pioneers enter with a 12-10 overall record and have won three of their last four games. As a team, Sacred Heart is hitting .300 through 22 games and features a lineup with four hitters that own a .340 average or better. Junior Liz Tsipouras boasts a .465 average to go along with three HR and 21 RBI. Courtney Lee, Taylor Froelich and Annie Dreher each have four HR, while Jade Bowins leads the team with seven stolen bases. In the circle, Jen Russell (6-6, 2.27 ERA) and Nicole Sidor (4-2, 2.82 ERA) are the team’s dominant pitchers. Stony Brook owns a 15-10 all-time record against the Pioneers dating back to the teams’ first meeting in 1997. The teams met last season for a doubleheader in Fairfield, Conn., which the Pioneers swept by scores of 1-0 and 5-2 on April 28.
Iona
The Gaels (7-10) have been on the road for the majority of the 2011 season, playing 15 of their 17 contests away from New Rochelle, N.Y. Iona owns an impressive victory over Hawaii, which it defeated 1-0 in nine innings on March 18 when the Warriors were ranked No. 20 in the nation. Katie Jansson leads the Gaels with a .326 average and Sarah Jackson has a team-best five wins in the circle. The Seawolves are 12-8 all-time against Iona since the teams first met in 1979.
Last Time Out
The Seawolves dropped three games to conference rival Boston University last weekend. The potent BU offense hit six home runs and produced 32 runs in three games, while holding Stony Brook to just 10 hits and three runs in the series. Combs recorded a hit in all three games and has now hit safely in 10 consecutive contests. Stony Brook was one of three America East schools to suffer three losses last weekend, joining UMBC and Hartford.
