About the Game: A chance to play for the America East title is on the line in today’s semifinal between Stony Brook and Vermont. This is a matchup between the top two defenses in the conference as both teams are allowing around only 61 PPG to opponents. This is SBU’s third appearance in the conference semifinals and is 0-2 all-time. Vermont leads the all-time series 17-4, defeated the Seawolves twice this year and defeated SBU in the 2002 America East quarterfinals, their only playoff matchup.

Scouting Vermont: The Catamounts, winners of the regular season with a 13-3 record, defeated No. 8 Binghamton 57-46 yesterday on the strength of stifling defense. The Catamounts have held opponents under 50 points eight times this season, including both games against Stony Brook. They are 16-0 when holding a team under 60 points. Brendan Bald is the leader of the defense, winning America East Defensive Player of the Year honors on Friday. The offense runs through Evan Fjeld, who averages 14.8 PPG and is shooting 54.5 percent from the field.

Last Time Out: In the quarters yesterday, Chris Martin scored 16 of his season-high 18 points in the second half and added six rebounds and five assists to lead SBU to a 67-61 win over Albany. Martin, who missed 13 games this season due to injury, was 8-for-9 from the free throw line  and 5-for-8 from the field. Bryan Dougher added 12 points, and Leonard Hayes had 11 for a Seawolves team that shot 48 percent for the game.

Last Time vs. Vermont: On Feb. 6, the Seawolves committed a season-high 24 turnovers and shot only 39 percent in a 65-42 loss to UVM in Burlington. SBU had little offensive rhythm against the league’s best defense. Leonard Hayes had 12 points to lead SBU. UVM shot 57 percent and was led by Brendan Bald’s 19 points. In its seven games since this one, Stony Brook is averaging only 9.9 turnovers per game.
