Stony Brook University's men's and women's tennis teams each rolled to 7-0 shutouts over Quinnipiac on Sunday afternoon. Neither team dropped a set in each of their six singles matches.
It was the fourth straight win for the women, who improved to 9-3 with win. It was the first match in almost a month for the men, who snapped a six-game losing streak.
The women's team opened the match by earning the doubles point. Juniors Salome Mkervalidze (Brewster, N.Y.) and Katherine Hanson (Smithtown ,N.Y.) won 8-0 at No. 3 but Quinnipiac won at the No. 2 position. But sophomore Aylin Mehter (Massapequa, N.Y.) and junior Prerana Appineni (Hyderabad, India) won a close 9-7 decision at the No. 1 spot to earn the first point of the match for the Seawolves.
SBU then cruised in singles play. Sophomore Nini Lagvilava (Tbilisi, Georgia) and Hanson each dropped just one game at the No. 1 and No. 5 positions, respectively. Mkervalidze lost just two games at No. 6 and Mehter won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2.
The men also jumped to a 1-0 lead, winning all three of the doubles matches. Senior Ivan Rummel (Budapest, Hungary) and sophomore Roope Kailaheimo (Helsinki, Finland) won in a tie-breaker at No. 1. SBU won 8-4 at both the No. 2 and No. 3 spots.
Rummel then continued his strong play in singles, winning 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1. No Stony Brook player lost more than five games in their respective matches.
The women and men each return to action with home matches on Friday. The women will take on Towson while the men will face off against St. Francis (Pa.).
