Senior Alicia Nelson (Apple Valley, Minn.) recorded a team-high 16 kills but the Stony Brook University volleyball team fell to the South Carolina Gamecocks, 3-1 (25-15, 19-25, 25-20, 25-10) in the final match of the Temple Invitational on Saturday.
Nelson also added 11 digs, her second double-double in three matches at the Temple Invitational. Freshman Laura Hathaway (Warsaw, N.Y.) led Stony Brook with 15 digs.
Stony Brook trailed just 12-9 early in set one on following an ace from junior Kelsey Sullivan (Hamilton, Va.). But South Carolina then went on an 8-2 run and the Seawolves got no closer than seven the rest of the way.
SBU led 10-9 early in set two and then slowly began to pull away, taking an 18-12 lead on back-to-back kills from Nelson. South Carolina closed within 20-16 but Stony Brook eventually pulled away for a six-point victory, closing it out on a kill from sophomore Evann Slaughter (Clinton, Md.).
The third set was close all the way with the Seawolves taking a 20-19 lead after a kill from Nelson and two kills from sophomore Hailee Herc (Eden, N.Y.). But following a timeout, the Gamecocks ran off six straight points to take a 2-1 lead.
Stony Brook was behind 11-8 early in set four before South Carolina took control. The Gamecocks went on an 11-2 run to take an 11-point lead before eventually closing out the set and the match on a kill from Juliette Thevenin
The Seawolves return to action next weekend, hosting Rhode Island, Iona and Kent State for the Stony Brook Holiday Inn Express Tournament.
