The Scene: Stony Brook gets into tournament action this weekend as it plays in the Duquesne Invitational against Pittsburgh Friday and host Duquesne Sunday. The Seawolves opened the 2011 season last week with a scoreless draw at Lehigh. Last season, Stony Brook played in one tournament, splitting a pair of games at the Dartmouth Invitational.
Scouting Pittsburgh: The Panthers return 16 letterwinners and six starters from last season's team that went 6-9-2 overall and 1-6-2 in the BIG EAST. The team is looking to return to the BIG EAST Championship under 28th year head coach Jon Luxbacher. So far this season, the Panthers have dropped road contests at Robert Morris and St. Francis (PA). The team returns top scorer senior Sam Luffy, who had four goals and an assist in 2010.
Scouting Duquesne: The Dukes were picked to finish 10th in the 14-team Atlantic 10 after they went 8-7-3 overall and 4-4-1 in the league in 2010. Duquesne is looking to get into the Atlantic 10 Championship for the first time since 2006. The team is off to a good start, beating Niagara in the season opener last week, 2-0. Sophomore Simon Gomez returns after leading the team in scoring as a rookie.
Preseason Poll: The Seawolves were picked to finish fourth in the America East preseason poll, according to the league's eight head coaches. Stony Brook is behind defending champion UMBC, Boston University and New Hampshire.
Strong Incumbents: Stony Brook returns 18 letterwinners from last season's team that finish 10-7-3 and advanced to the America East Championship semifinals. Among the returnees are America East Midfielder of the Year Leonardo Fernandes and second-team All-America East forward Raphael Abreu. The team returns 92 percent of its goal scoring offense, and Fernandes, Abreu and Berian Gobeil Cruz combined to score 19 goals.
Going for the Title: The Seawolves previously have captured two America East Championships, winning titles in 2005 and 2009. The team will look to win its third championship and advance to the NCAA Tournament, where it previously has won with a 2005 victory over Yale.
