Junior Leonardo Fernandes (Sao Paulo, Brazil) has been named the America East Player of the Week for his role in helping the Stony Brook men's soccer team win two of three games last week.
Fernandes had five points in the three games, including a two-goal effort at Temple. His first goal against the Owls was a penalty kick attempt that helped the Seawolves cut a two-goal deficit to one goal. His second goal was the equalizer in the 74th minute that completed the comeback and set up the game-winning goal by junior Kyle Schlesinger (Selden, N.Y.).
It was Fernandes' third career two-goal game and first this season. He also assisted on a goal by junior Berian Gobeil Cruz (Montreal, Quebec) in a 4-1 win over Fairfield last Tuesday.
Fernandes is now tied with Gobeil Cruz for the team lead in goals with three and leads the team in points with eight.
Fernandes and the Seawolves open America East play this Friday at New Hampshire at 3:30 p.m.
