Stony Brook, N.Y. - Stony Brook men's basketball junior point guard Anthony Jackson (Columbus, Ohio) has been named a candidate for the Bob Cousy Award, given to the nation's best point guard, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced Thursday. Jackson is one of 85 student-athletes nominated for the prestigious honor.

Jackson is enjoying a terrific start to the 2012-13 season, his first as Stony Brook's starting point guard after spending his freshman and sophomore seasons backing up Cousy Award nominee Bryan Dougher. Jackson is currently Stony Brook's leading scorer at 13.2 points per game and has scored in double figures in eight of 10 games this season.

Jackson has a pair of 20-point games this season, pouring in 21 vs. Canisius and 20 vs. Cornell. An outstanding three-point shooter, Jackson is shooting 38.6% from behind the arc and has connected on three treys five times this season.

Jackson also is one of the nation's best free throw shooters. He is currently 15th in the NCAA with an 93.8% free throw percentage and in his career is 88.3% from the stripe.

This watch list of candidates will be narrowed down to a final 20 around January 1, final 10 near February 1, and final five by approximately March 1. A premier Selection Committee has been appointed by the Hall of Fame to review the final five candidates in contention for the nation’s top collegiate point guard award. These Hall of Fame committees are made up of top college basketball personnel including media members, head coaches, sports information directors and Hall of Famers. The winner of the 2013 Bob Cousy Award will be presented at the Hall of Fame’s Class Announcement on Championship Monday in Atlanta as part of NCAA Final Four weekend.
