Softball travels to Fairfield for doubleheader Wednesday

March 20, 2012

Fairfield, Conn. - The Stony Brook softball team will hit the road this Wednesday for a mid-week doubleheader against Fairfield starting at 2 p.m. Stony Brook is coming off a two-game sweep of Holy Cross over the weekend and enters Wednesday with a 12-6 record overall.

Week in Review
Stony Brook posted a 2-2 record last week, dropping a pair of games to Texas Tech, and sweeping Holy Cross at home. Freshman Allison Cukrov (Irvine, Calif.), named the America East Rookie of the Week on Monday, fired her first-career no-hitter on Saturday against the Crusaders, striking out 10 and allowing just two baserunners in a 7-0 win. Junior Taylor Chain (Gloucester, N.J.) picked up the victory in the second game vs. Holy Cross, posting seven strikeouts in a decisive 10-1 victory.

Fairfield
The Stags enter Wednesday with a 10-10 record, but have lost five of their last six games. Wednesday will be Fairfield's home opener as the team has played all 20 of its games on the road thus far. The Seawolves and Stags have faced three common opponents this year– Kansas, Army and Florida Gulf Coast– and have each posted 1-2 records against the opposition (both teams beat Army). Stony Brook and Fairfield split a pair of games last year at University Field with the Seawolves winning the first game, 2-1, and Fairfield prevailing in the second matchup, 5-4.

What's Ahead
Following Wednesday's doubleheader, Stony Brook will open conference play at home on Saturday against Hartford. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1 p.m., before wrapping up the series Sunday at 12 p.m.
