Fresh off an eight-game home stand, the Stony Brook baseball team hits the road for a four-game series against the Albany Great Danes this weekend. The teams will play a doubleheader on both Saturday and Sunday beginning at noon.
Last time out: The Stony Brook University baseball team pounded out a season-high 17 hits on its way to a 14-5 victory over the Marist Red Foxes on Wednesday at Joe Nathan Field. Junior William Carmona (Hempstead, N.Y.) led the Seawolves with three hits and three RBI. Senior Pat Cantwell (West Islip, N.Y.) added three hits while junior Tanner Nivins (Kitchener, Ontario) and freshmen Kevin Krause (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Cole Peragine (Belle Ewart, Ontario) each drove in two runs. Freshman Matt Gallup (Albany, N.Y.) allowed one run in 3.0 innings of relief work to pick up the victory.
Seawolves News & Notes: Stony Brook (21-9, 2-1 AE) went 7-1 on its recently completed eight-game home stand ... the Seawolves opened the conference season by taking two of three from Binghamton at Joe Nathan Field last weekend ... senior right-hander Tyler Johnson entered this week's action ranked third in the nation with 0.77 ERA ... Johnson allowed one run in eight innings in the Seawolves 2-1 win over Binghamton last week ... Johnson went 5-0 with 0.95 ERA in America East play last season ... sophomore Frankie Vanderka leads the country in fewest hits allowed per nine innings (3.86) ... the Seawolves pitching staff has an ERA of 2.67 which ranks eighth in the country.
Scouting Albany: The Great Danes (8-21, 2-1 AE) took two of three from Hartford to open the America East play last weekend before falling to Marist in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday. Albany is last in the America East in team batting average (.249) and its pitching staff is giving up almost six runs per game. Josh Nathaway is leading the Great Danes in hitting at .319. Albany was picked third in the America East preseason coaches poll after reaching the America East title game last season.
