March 4, 2013

Cambridge, Mass. - The Stony Brook men's basketball team swept the final America East weekly awards as senior Tommy Brenton (Columbia, Md.) has been named America East Player of the Week and freshman Jameel Warney (Plainfield, N.J.) has been named America East Rookie of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.

Brenton, who earns Player of the Week honors for the second time this season, averaged a double-double last week with 10.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 7.0 assists. Against Boston University last Thursday, Brenton flirted with a triple-double, posting 14 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists and three steals in a 71-55 win over the Terriers. Against Albany on Sunday, he had six points, seven rebounds and seven assists, meaning he now has recorded seven assists in each of his last three games. Brenton, who now has six double-doubles this season, finished the week with 14 assists to just five turnovers.

Brenton ended the regular season averaging 8.9 points, 8.7 rebounds and 4.9 assists. He ranks third in America East in rebounding and assists and ranks first in assist/turnover ratio at 2.25.

Warney, who earns his eighth Rookie of the Week honor of the season, made eight of 12 shots last week for a 66.7 field goal percentage as he continues his run as the league's top shooter. Against Boston University, he was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field and 3-for-3 from the line to finish with a game-high 15 points. It was the third time this season Warney attempted at least five shots and made them all. He added 10 points in the win over Albany, extending his double-digit scoring streak to five games.

Warney leads America East in field goal percentage at 62.4 and also ranks sixth in rebounding (7.3) and 10th in scoring (12.2).

Stony Brook finished the regular season 23-6, breaking the program's Div. I record for most wins in a season. The Seawolves claimed their second straight America East regular season championship and third in the last four years with a dominating 14-2 conference record that was three games better than the second-place team. The Seawolves will be the No. 1 seed in this weekend's America East Championship and will play No. 8 seed Binghamton Saturday at SEFCU Arena in Albany, N.Y., at 6 p.m.
