Stony Brook, N.Y. - Stony Brook men's basketball senior Tommy Brenton (Columbia, Md.) has been named the America East Fans' Choice Player of the year, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Brenton proved to be the popular vote among the fans, earning 1,318 of 3,203 votes, good for 41.1 percent of the total vote. Brenton finished 292 votes ahead of Vermont junior Brian Voelkel.
Brenton, co-captain of the Seawolves, is averaging 8.9 points, 8.7 rebounds and 4.9 assists this season and has been the leader of a Stony Brook defense that ranks fifth in the nation in field goal percentage defense at 37.4 percent.
Earlier this season, Brenton dazzled Stony Brook fans with the program's first-ever triple-double when he posted 15 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists against Maine on Jan. 26. In the last 10 days, Brenton has flirted with a triple-double twice; he had 13 points, 20 rebounds and seven assists at Maine on Feb. 24 and then had 14 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists at Boston University on Feb. 28.
Brenton and the Seawolves captured their third America East regular season championship in the last four seasons with a 14-2 conference record. The Seawolves also posted a Div. I program record 23-6 overall mark. The Seawolves are the No. 1 seed in the America East Championship and will take on No. 8 seed Binghamton Saturday at SEFCU Arena in Albany, N.Y., at 6 p.m.
