Cambridge, Mass. — After turning in performances that punched the Stony Brook volleyball team’s ticket to the conference tournament, redshirt junior Kathy Fletcher and junior Nicole Vogel have been named America East Co-Player of the Week and Setter of the Week, respectively.
Fletcher led the league in kills per set (4.75) in wins over SUNY rivals Binghamton and Albany. On Sunday vs. the Great Danes, the West Chicago, Ill., native posted a career-high 21 smacks on .409 hitting to become the first Seawolf to surpass 20 kills in a match this season. The Player of the Week nod is the second of the year for Fletcher, who also earned the recognition Sept. 29. She splits the honor with Delaney Dameron of New Hampshire.
Vogel has picked up her fourth Setter of the Week honor after notching two double-doubles and averaging a conference-best 14.75 assists per frame. Against Binghamton, she tied a career high of 60 assists and added 14 digs as the Seawolves clinched a berth in the America East Championship for the second time in two years under head coach Coley Pawlikowski. She followed that up by tallying 58 helpers and 12 digs vs. Albany. Vogel, who hails from Costa Mesa, Calif., is second on the team with 10 double-doubles in 2014 and has recorded one in each of the last three matches.
SBU wraps up regular season America East action at New Hampshire Thursday and UMass Lowell.
Notes
Stony Brook was the second team to clinch a berth in the America East Championship. New Hampshire was first…the Seawolves’ 17 wins are the most for the program since 2007 (24)…SBU posted a dominant 10-2 mark at Pritchard during the regular season…A pair of Stony Brook wins and New Hampshire losses would give Stony Brook a share of the regular season title for the first time since 2007. The Wildcats play Hartford Friday night at home and have already clinched a share of the crown.
