Stony Brook, N.Y. - Junior
Rayshaun McGrew (Chicago, Ill.) of the Stony Brook men's basketball team has been named the America East Player of the Week after lifting the #Seawolves to a season-opening 57-56 win over Columbia, the conference office announced Monday.
McGrew nets his first-ever America East weekly honor. It is also the 17th time in program history a Stony Brook student-athlete has been named Player of the Week.
With less than 10 seconds remaining in the game, McGrew corralled a junior
Jameel Warney (Plainfield, N.J.) missed layup and hit the put-back layup to give the #Seawolves a 57-56 lead that held up after Columbia's buzzer-beating attempt. It finished off an outstanding night for McGrew, who scored 14 points, matching junior
Carson Puriefoy (Wenonah, N.J.) for the team high, to go with eight rebounds and three steals. The 14 points and three steals were both career highs for McGrew.
McGrew was critical in getting Stony Brook back in the game after the Lions went up by 16 mid first half. He scored six of his 14 points during Stony Brook's 13-3 run to end the first half to make it just a six-point deficit.
McGrew and the #Seawolves play at Georgia Tuesday night in Athens, Ga., as part of the NIT Season Tip-Off. The game will be televised live on the SEC Network.
