Durham, N.H. -- Six members of the Stony Brook volleyball team picked up hardware Thursday night at the America East end-of-year banquet in Durham, N.H. The Seawolves tied Albany and New Hampshire for most overall nods.
Redshirt senior Evann Slaughter headlined the night for Stony Brook with a first-team all-conference selection for the second time in her career. Junior Nicole Vogel and redshirt junior Kathy Fletcher placed on the second team and freshman Cydney Bowman was named All-Rookie. Senior Taylor Gillie and junior Melissa Rigo were honored for their work on the court and in the classroom with a pair of All-Academic nods.
Slaughter is seventh in the league in hitting percentage (.251), eighth in blocks (0.72), tenth in points (2.88) and 11th in kills (2.50). The middle blocker became the 10th player in program history to record her 1,000th career kill Friday night at UMass Lowell.
Slaughter, who hails from Oxford, Md., is second in school history in career block assists (272) and fourth in total blocks (353). She was named America East Rookie of the Year in 2010, second-team all-conference in 2011 and first-team all-conference in 2012.
Vogel, a four-time America East Setter of the Week and one-time ECAC Player of the Week, ranks third in the league in assists (9.58) and 16th in digs (2.49). On Nov. 7 vs. Binghamton, Vogel tied her career best of 60 assists to help the Seawolves punch their ticket to the America East Championship.
Fletcher, who was twice named America East Player of the Week, has contributed to Stony Brook's success in multiple ways this season. The middle blocker and outside hitter is fourth in the conference in points (3.64) and kills (3.00), seventh in stuffs (0.76) and 11th in aces (0.25).
Bowman has seen action in 19 matches during her freshman campaign and has made an instant impact defensively. She tallied seven digs vs. Hartford Oct. 24 and nine digs at New Hampshire Nov. 13.
Gillie a double major in anthropology and sociology who leads the league in stuffs (1.20), has made her mark on the Stony Brook community and volleyball record books during her four-year tenure. The middle blocker currently ranks second in single-season Division I school history with 110 block assists in 2014 and is third all-time in career block assists (258). She was named America East Player of the Week and the Seawolves Invite Presented by Islandia Marriott Long Island MVP after leading the team with 2.55 kills per set and 1.55 blocks per set during the three-match tournament.
Gillie, who holds a 3.41 grade-point average (GPA), serves as the Co-President of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. She created the PACK mentorship program, which focuses on student-athletes setting cultural expectations for the department through mentoring freshmen and strengthening bonds between all teams. A five-team Dean's List honoree, she is a member of Choices and interned with the Student-Athlete Development Center during the summer of 2014.
Rigo, an outside hitter and business major with a 3.65 GPA, is on the All-Academic Team for the second consecutive season. On Oct. 18 vs. New Hampshire, she tallied her 1,000th career kill. Rigo leads the team with 11 double-doubles and is second in kills (3.24) and digs (2.79). She is a PACK peer mentor and has made Dean's List three times.
Stony Brook takes on New Hampshire in an America East semifinal match Friday at 6 p.m.
