Stony Brook, N.Y. - The #Seawolves will try to improve their playoff positioning on Wednesday night when they host regular season champion UMBC. With a win and a Vermont loss or tie, the Seawolves would nail down a first round home playoff game.
Scouting UMBC
The Retrievers clinched the America East regular season title on Saturday with a 5-1 drubbing of Vermont. UMBC is unbeaten in conference play at 5-0-1 and is 9-5-3 on the season. The Retrievers 28 goals are nine clear of the next highest total in the conference. Senior forward Kay Banjo leads the conference in points with 20 on seven goals and six assists. His assist total tops the conference, while his seven goals are tied with UMass Lowell’s Wuilito Fernandes for league-high. Senior midfielder Mamadou Kansaye is also dangerous in front of opposing goals. He ranks third in the conference in points (13) on four goals and five assists. Senior defender Oumar Ballo is also one of the top players the Seawolves have faced this season. Ballo was named to the preseason Hermann Trophy Watch list (the award given to the top player in the country) and was ranked as the third best player in the entire nation by Top Drawer soccer to start the season.
All-Time Series
UMBC leads the all-time series over Stony Brook 9-6. The Retrievers clipped the Seawolves last season on a late goal to pull out a 1-0 victory on their way to the 2013 America East Championship.
Senior Night
Head coach Ryan Anatol and the Seawolves program will honor Keith McKenna (Great River, N.Y.), Jevaughn Vance (Arima, Trinidad) and Mario Mesen before the match as the trio plays in their last regular season game in LaValle Stadium.
Freshmen Playmakers
Stony Brook freshmen Thibault Duval (Grace Hollogne, Belgium) and Danny Espinoza (East Meadow, N.Y.) are tied-for-third in the America East and lead Stony Brook with four assists each. Espinoza has quietly put together a solid freshman season from his right back position, starting all 17 contests and joining the attack frequently enough to set up four goals. Duval has started 11 matches and is tied for the team lead with eight points, scoring two goals to go along with his four assists.
